I was absent-mindedly scrolling through Perezhilton today when I came across a blog post about Gloucester High School in response to an article in Time magazine. The article is about how there are currently 17 pregnant students at the high school, none of who are over the age of 16…
WHAAATT??? 17?!?! 16?!?!
This has got to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all week. And ya know what’s even more ridiculous? They WANTED to get pregnant, so much so that one of the fathers is a 24-year-old HOMELESS MAN!!! Can someone please get these girls a condom? Or a lobotomy?
Many people are blaming Hollywood for this incident, and the overall increase in teen pregnancies in the United States, but I really don’t see why. Neither Juno or Knocked Up glorify pregnancy in any way. In fact, they clearly show how much it can alter your life and introduce you to new levels of pain. (In the words of Ellen Paige… “ow ow fuckity ow!”)
Really, I feel bad for these girls, because they have absolutely no idea what they’ve gotten themselves into. Perhaps it is better that they “wanted” this and are excited about it, since it saves them from coming face to face with the crushing reality of their decision. It’s a sad thing when young women are so misguided and ignored that they think that having a baby is the only way to be loved….
