these are the days…

Whoever said that high school was the “best days of our lives” either lived in Pleasantville or was sniffing rubber glue everyday after school. As American minors, we are forced to spend 12 years in the public education system, and while some drop out, most make it from kindergarten to senior year in almost one piece. Hollywood tries to recreate the traditional “high school” atmosphere in the movies and tv shows, but most often fail miserably. I’m coming to the end of my high school career, and looking back, I’m realizing that I hated just about every minute of it. From waking up early, to pointless classes and assignments, to stupid friend drama, I’ve genuinely despised anything and everything that was associated with my school for the past 4 years. I fail to see the logic behind “the best days of our lives”, considering these days were filled with rules, regulations, “no”s, and consequences. Petty drama ruled the hallways, and now that were seniors people expect us to come together as a class and be all buddy-buddy? Yeah, maybe after some serious electro shock therapy…

Maybe my viewpoint will change when I’m sitting in the gym waiting for my diploma, but as of right now, I just can’t wait to peace the eff out of here and never look back.

Only the BEST DUET EVER!!!

I began my day like any other. I was in the library working on my AP final paper (and by working, I mean aimlessly browsing the web and playing Icy Tower). Somehow, I came across somebody’s blog, and read a post about the best duets of all time. In this post, they mentioned that Brandon Flowers of The Killers sang “In A Little While” with Bono and U2 way back in 2005.

Did I ever mention that this is one of my favorite songs of all time? Well now you know. This is the song that I’m going to dance with my dad to at my wedding. It is that good.

Watch it. Twice.

Things one should never do…

1. Run into chain link fences at full speed. I’ve done it recently. Its really no fun, and I’ve got the bruises to prove it. It wasn’t my fault, per-say.

2. Limit your college search. It leaves you with very little choices. Take it from me, apply everywhere and anywhere that you remotely like. It’ll help you in the long run.

3. Work more than 15 hours a week while still in school. It sucks and it leaves very little time for napping or reading magazines.

4. Blow off senior finals. While I haven’t done it yet, I’m trying really hard to get in the right mindset to do well on them, rather than blow them off. Hopefully it will help.

5. Count down the hours until summer. Even with 9 days left, thats still alotta hours. It makes it seem really far away.

Some jams, of both the fruit and music variety

I got a drink from the Barnes and Noble cafe in Saratoga, NY yesterday, and it was called D’Peach Mode. A clever play on words, the juice was FANTASTIC. Its definitely my new favorite. The labels all have random, sometimes funny pictures submitted to the company by fans of the beverage, and underneath the cap was a quirky little picture of a kitty cat. On the label, there was a link for a website run by the company that featured new and upcoming music. I checked out the site today, and it’s definitely a great source for great music. Its got a search engine to find local bands from your area, and visitors to the site can create their own playlists of the featured music. Check it out here.

And best of all, the Duffmeister has not blocked it, so it’s available to listen to at school. Needless to say, I’ve found my new favorite activity to waste away my last 9 days here at Hopkins…

Yahoo News ran a story this morning about a man who escaped an attack from a great white shark. He was swimming 80 meters off the coast of South Western Australia.
He poked the shark in the eye.
I’m just saying, I’ve heard this before. That generally is considered the “thing to do” when your being attacked by a shark. Everyone knows that. But I’m just saying…
Also, what would possess him to swim 80 METERS!!! off the coast, in an area known for it’s shark population? Crazy crazy people.

In other news…

I had a cook out this weekend. Summer is almost here. I can’t wait to go swimming, and I bet you can’t either. Just watch out for sharks.

I am a slacker. I’ll admit that. (Proudly, in fact.) I pride myself on my ability to conjure up answers to essays on book’s I’ve never even opened and I can rock a class discussion on an article I’ve never read. It’s not that I don’t want to do my work. Actually… that’s exactly it.

Throughout my life I’ve been told that the goal of elementary school is to prepare you for high school, and the goal of high school is to prepare you for college, and that the goal of college is to prepare you for life, and the goal of life is….well, what? By this logic, what is the point of doing all that work in school? Will knowing the themes behind To Kill A Mockingbird really help me in life? Negative, ghost rider.

Basically what I’m saying is know how to bullshit. Know how to bullshit well. It’s the single most useful thing I’ve learned in 12 years of school.

“We’d search for a cure, but we’re too lazy…”

With only 18 school days left until graduation, my life has become a mash of graduation meetings, college paperwork, worrying about the future, and trying not to fail my classes. Since when did senior year become so stressful? Lately, I’ve found that all I want to do is color with crayons after naptime. I miss those days. Senioritis has not proved to be beneficial to me…at all. Considering I’ve had senioritis since sophomore year, I’m convinced that there is only one cure: graduation.

18 more days. 18 more days.

Until then, you’ll most likely find me in the journalism room, napping, playing solitaire, or frantically trying to finish work that was due two weeks ago…

This post is for everyone that I know, and that knows me….(although if you are neither, I’m suprised that you’re reading this.) I went to UVM last weekend for an accepted student’s day, and while I was walking around, I noticed a lot of people wearing plaid flannel shirts (girls mostly) and at first, I’ll admit that I wanted to throw on a summer dress and run to the nearest beach…but then I realized that I was in Burlington and it gets cold and snowy and there’s really no beach around…

Then I keep seeing these Buffalo-Check slannel shirts with leggins, skirts, a dress, jeans…just about anything. And I kinda want one…BUT IT’S PLAID FLANNEL! I just can’t get over that. I don’t know. I’m going to google search “women’s buffalo check shirt” until I find something that I like…if I find something that I like.

If you feel like talking me out of it, you’re more than welcome.
